NE-02 candidate Sen. Tony Vargas raises over $870,000 in first fundraising quarter

Vargas is a top Democratic fundraiser across the country; Bacon is increasingly vulnerable

Omaha, Neb. – The Vargas campaign announced today that his campaign for Congress raised more than $870,000 in the first quarter of his campaign to represent Nebraska’s second district – the most money ever raised in an off year quarter of any congressional race in Nebraska history. Previously, the campaign reported strong fundraising for a Democratic candidate in NE-02: $250,000 in the first 24 hours of the campaign.

“I am thrilled to have such a strong start to our campaign and humbled to have support from Nebraskans, who are making it clear that they are ready for strong, principled leadership in Washington,” Vargas said. “That’s how I’ve led as a senator and that’s exactly how I’ll operate as a Congressman.”

Of the $870,000 raised, 78% of Vargas’s contributions are from Nebraska, showing robust support from voters in the state who are increasingly discontent with Rep. Don Bacon – a recent poll shows his approval rating under water by 28 points.

The current chaos in Congress is just the most recent example of Don Bacon’s failure to represent Nebraska and the increasingly vulnerable position he now finds himself in. Bacon has long relied on Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s fundraising in his re-election campaigns – he has received more than $300,000 from the former speaker and affiliated groups – and House GOP candidates in purple districts stand to be hurt the most by the recent change in leadership, according to The Messenger.
